Abstract
This final year project is a simulation project of finite element method using ABAQUS software. This project studies about the energy absorption and mean load of a mild steel groove-tube and groove-less tube when having an axial crushing. The tubes dimensions are 100mm of length, 56mm of outer diameter, 52mm of inner diameter, and 100mm length. The groove dimension is 3mm width and 1mm depth. The tubes are then simulated using the ABAQUS and then analyzed. The energy absorption were determined using the software analysis and was compared with the experimental result done by previous researchers. Energy absorb after the compression of groove-tube are 4730J and 5630J for the groove-less tube. The absorption of energy in experimental is 4752.4J for groove-tube and 5688J for the groove-less tube. The mean crushing load for groove-tube and groove-less tube in analysis is 58.34KN and 68.55KN while the result for experimental data is 58.38KN and 81.26KN. The analysis result, in compare with the experimental result is a little bit lower but it still within the normal range. The model could help to understanding the crashworthiness of the tubes therefore it could improve the absorption system in the future.
