Abstract
A porous medium is a material consisting of a solid matrix with an interconnected void (pores) filled with a fluid. The mechanics of porous media theory has become very important for many applications mainly because of the increase of human influence on the environment. The aim of this research is to study the heat transfer rate of the porous medium which the finite volume method and Computer Fluid Dynamics were used. The programming language (Fortran) used to solve the complication mathematical equations and problems, while the visualization software (MicroAvs) used to display the results visually. To investigate the heat transfer rate, the effect of ratio length of X-axis (XL). Rayleigh number (Ra), mesh size (N,M) and way of heating (uniform heating or non-uniform heating) are take into account. Based on the data gained, the effect of ratio length of X-axis is less infection than the effect of Rayleigh number on the heat transfer rate. The heat transfer rate is highly increased by the increasing of Rayleigh number. Besides that, non-uniform heating have higher value of Nusselt number (heat transfer rate ) than uniform heating applied. The mesh size 41×41 is having the minimum error, so it is the best mesh size result compare to other mesh size tested.
