Laser surface texturing (LST) has become one of the most popular technologies due to its high flexibility, advanced texturing accuracy and good controllability. Titanium and its alloy have a great manufacturing characteristic, although this material can be categorized for having a poor tribological performance. However, Ti6Al4V is a successful titanium alloy to be used frequently especially in biomedical applications due to its low surface hardness and high coefficient. In this research, Ti6Al4V sample underwent laser texturing process using Ytterbium:YAG pulsed laser with 12 W to18 W laser power at laser speed of 180 to 220 mm/s with a frequency of 40 to 60 kHz to create a grid-array pattern with a hatching line distance of 0.4 mm. A polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coating layer was applied to the surface of textured sample to investigate the surface characterization of laser surface textured and to analyze the frictional wear behavior of laser textured surface of Ti6Al4V when carried out on pin-on-flat contact with DUCOM TR-20 friction tester at room temperature under dry condition. The microhardness values were obtained using Vickers Hardness tester to study the surface morphology and microstructural of Ti6Al4V laser textured sample. The wear rate and COF of textured surface improved by 16.67% and 36.36% compared to untextured Ti6Al4V. It was concluded that LST can enhanced good beneficial to Ti6Al4V material and can gain a better wear performance.
