This study investigates the effect of double butt lap joint geometries on the tensile and hardness properties the joint obtained via friction stir welding (FSW). The objectives are to study the influence of different geometrical parameters on the mechanical properties and to determine the optimal geometrical parameters using the Taguchi method. The research involves conducting experiments with varying double butt lap joint geometries, considering factors geometry parameter. Tensile tests and hardness test measurements are performed to evaluate the mechanical properties of the joints. The Taguchi method, a statistical optimization technique, is applied to identify the optimal combination of geometrical parameters that would result in improved tensile and hardness properties. This approach allows for a systematic evaluation of the factors' effects and interactions, leading to the determination of the most influential parameters and their optimal settings. In this study, the optimal parameter for 2mm thickness AA6061-AA5052 was determined by using Taguchi method to the hardness test and tensile test results. By hardness testing, is A/B is 1.0mm/1.0mm and C is 1.5mm and for tensile testing, A/B is 1.5mm/0.5mm and C is 1.0mm. The findings of this study provide valuable insight into the relationship between double butt joint geometry and mechanical outcomes in FSW that can guide future manufacturing processes and to achieve desired tensile and stiffness properties in similar applications.
