The lumbar spine - or low back - is the third major region of the spine. Each vertebra is stacked on top of the other and between each vertebra is a gel-like cushion called a disc (intervertebral disc). The main causes of back pain and a spinal disorder is the degeneration of intervertebal disc. The main purpose of this final year project is to develop a three dimensional finite element model of human lumbar spine. The model of three dimensional finite element human lumbar spine developed by Nastran/Patran software. Points on surfaces of model human lumbar are connected in order to develop this finite element model of human lumbar. All of necessary data about the vertebrae such as shape and geometry of the lumbar gained from literature surveys. After model of human lumbar spine was developed, one of the vertebrae was analyzed by Nastran /Patran software. To analyze model of finite element human lumbar, a force applied on the model. The force applied is referred to human normal daily activities. As a result. displacement occurred on the original shape of finite element human lumbar model. The study is carried out to help in selecting the good spine cage for the patient. The model provides important information regarding to its effect after certain loads applied on it.
