This study investigates the fabrication and characterization of biodegradable microbeads for personal care applications, using poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) as a sustainable alternative to conventional plastic microbeads. The study explores three variables affecting microbead properties: polymer concentration, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) concentration, and stirring speed during the emulsion solvent evaporation (ESE) process. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to analyze the chemical structure, while Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) examined the morphology and size distribution. Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis) assessed drug release profiles, and drug release kinetics were studied using various models, including first order, zero order, korsmeyer-peppas, higuchi, and hixson-crowell. The cleansing efficiency of PHBV microbeads was evaluated, along with biodegradation tests to determine the biodegradation rate in different media such as seawater, river water, and tap water. The research demonstrated that optimal PHBV microbead fabrication can be achieved by fine-tuning the studied parameters, resulting in microbeads with desirable mechanical properties, solvent resistance, smooth surface shape, and uniform size. These findings contribute to the development of eco-friendly personal care products, reducing pollution and protecting marine ecosystems. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of biodegradable microbead fabrication, paving the way for future research and industrial applications such as personal care applications.
