Abstract
Background: Domestic violence possess a significant impact on growing children, however, the available evidence is limited and most likely underreported. Thus, Child Exposure to Domestic Violence (CEDV) scale was developed and had been used internationally. This study is intended to provide a cross-cultural translation, adaptation and validation of CEDV into Malay language Methods: CEDV was translated from the original version in English to Malay. The content and face validity were examined prior to field-testing conducted at a secondary school. The translated tool was tested for construct validity, internal consistency and stability. Results: CEDV-M was administered via an online platform with a high response rate by a total of 235 children aged 13 to 16 years old. The CEDV-M has good stability reliability, evidenced by the intra-class correlation (ICC) value for all of the items ranging from 0.659 to 1.00. The Exploratory Factor Analysis of the 36 items of CEDV revealed possibilities of 5 or 6 factors domains, but 5 factors domains were most conceptually relevant. The CEDV-M was reliable with total Cronbach alpha of 0.87. Conclusion: CEDV-M is a valid and reliable tool to measure the child’s experience of domestic violence from their perspective. Confirmatory factor analysis and standard setting for the scoring system are recommended for future study.
