Abstract
The focus of this research project is to investigate the congestion of passenger flow at the check-in area in Penang International Airport (PEN). There are several check-in procedures that the passengers are required to do before they can board the plane. Lengthy lines at the self-check-in kiosk may cause crowds at the check-in area. Thus, affecting passengers’ flights delayed and causing negative effect on passengers’ experience at the airport. Thus, the objective of this research study is to propose a simulation model that will operate optimally to estimate the configurations of the airport self-check-in area by reducing the in-wait time of passengers at the self-check-in area in the airport terminal using software WITNESS Horizon Educational Version (Manufacturing Performance Edition). There are two different models that simulate the passengers’ flow at the self-check-in area in two different scenarios. The average time of passengers spend in the simulation model will be parameter to measure whether the simulation model is suitable to be implemented in real life. The simulation's outcome is based on lesser average time of passengers spend in the WITNESS simulation passenger of two simulation models. The performance of the machines, buffers, and labor are considered, while analyzing each simulation model's output. The percentage of labor busy, the percentage of machine busy, and the average time of passengers spend in the simulation models, and other factors are then used to compare each sector. The proposed simulation model is compared to the current layout of the self-check-in area in which recorded average time that passengers spent in the model is 67.99 minutes with total passengers of 114 passengers completed the check-in process. Along with, the proposed simulation model which recorded average time of passengers spent in the model is 65.01 minutes which total passengers of 123 passengers completed the check-in process where the proposed simulation model performs better in reducing the amount of time passengers wait at the check-in area of airport terminal.
