Abstract
This study investigates the development of a flameless cyclone combustor tailored for producer gas, a challenging low-calorific value fuel derived from biomass gasification. Producer gas typically contains 18-22% CO, 12-15% H₂, 2-5% CH₄, 8-10% CO₂, and 45-55% N₂, presenting unique combustion challenges. The research focuses on optimizing key design parameters, such as chamber height and equivalence ratio, to achieve stable and efficient combustion. Results indicated that increasing the chamber height enhances the likelihood of flameless combustion by extending residence times, which improves gas mixing and reaction. However, this also led to elevated NOx emissions. An optimal chamber height of 600 mm was identified as a balance between reduced CO emissions, below 50 ppm, and controlled NOx emissions, under 30 ppm. The study also found that operating within an equivalence ratio of 0.7 to 0.9 maintained stable combustion while minimizing CO and NOx emissions. Integrating the optimized combustor with a single-stage micro gas turbine (MGT) demonstrates significant potential for improving micro-scale power generation systems' efficiency and emissions profile. These findings underscore the potential for producer gas to be used more effectively in sustainable energy solutions, paving the way for cleaner and more efficient biomass-derived power generation.
