dc.description.abstractSeismic resilience awareness in Malaysia is often overlooked due to its geographical location. This research aims to address earthquake risks and their impact on existing structures by developing a probabilistic approach to assess the seismic resilience index (SRI) for existing reinforced concrete (RC) buildings in Malaysia. The proposed approach provides valuable tools and knowledge to enhance the seismic resilience of buildings in Malaysia and other seismically active regions worldwide. By analysing two models and 25 case studies, the research evaluated direct losses, recovery time, robustness, and SRI of the buildings under near-fault (NF) and far-fault (FF) earthquakes. The findings revealed that buildings demonstrated greater resilience and lower vulnerability to damage under far-fault (FF) seismic motions, indicating fewer direct losses and shorter recovery time. Notably, low-rise buildings exhibited higher SRI values, suggesting greater resilience and reduced vulnerability to damage. Specifically, low-rise buildings showed 26% to 50% fewer direct losses, 36% to 62% shorter recovery times, and 16% to 28% higher robustness than mid-rise and high-rise buildings. In the other words, low rise buildings demonstrated 4% and 7% more resilience than high-rise and mid-rise buildings, respectively. The results were visualised in a 3D mapping format using Geographical Information System (GIS) to provide a comprehensive overview. In conclusion, this probabilistic methodology contributes to seismic risk management, informing decision-making on mitigation strategies, retrofitting measures, and resource allocation to enhance overall structural resilience in earthquake-prone areas.
