Abstract
This project was carried out to investigate the mode of deformation of aluminium cylindrical thin tubes when inverted externally over a mild steel die with various radius sizes when subjected to dynamic loadings. The simulation is performed to resemble a dynamic impact test of a drop hammer with a mass of 66 kg and an initial velocity of 10ms 1 The models of the tube and dies were generated and meshed using IDEAS and then exported into the PAM CRASH™ software for the simulation process. The cylinder is defined as an elastic plastic material to resemble annealed material properties, while the die is defined as a null material. From the simulation process, the mode of deformation of the tube is obtained and the affect of the different die radiuses are analyzed. When compared to the results of a dynamic testing of internally inverted mild steel tubes done by Harrigan,et.al (1999), the load time graph generated from the simulation using PAM CRASH™ has the same trend as the load time graph obtained by their experiment and simulation using ABAQUS. At the end of the report, several suggestions are given for further investigation on this topic.
