Abstract
Cement concrete contributes to global CO2 emissions, posing a challenge to sustainable development. Bamboo fibre is green and environmentally friendly; incorporating it into concrete enhances durability, reflecting green construction and advancing smart construction with its contribution to sustainable practices. In this study, the bamboo fibres were treated by calcium hydroxide solution. The microstructure, thermo-stability and tensile properties of the treated and untreated bamboo fibre were studied. The concrete was added with treated and untreated bamboo fibres between 0.5%- 2.5% of cement weight. Fourteen wet-dry cycles were performed after 7, 14, and 28 days of concrete curing. The mechanical strengths (compression, tension, and bending), water permeability resistance, and chloride ion penetration resistance were tested both before and after the wet-dry cycles. The effects of different bamboo fibre parameters on concrete durability were analyzed. The treated bamboo fibre improved the thermal stability and tensile properties as lignin, hemicellulose, and pectin were effectively removed. Concrete with treated bamboo fibre significantly increased mechanical strength (pull, and bending) by 10%- 20%, water permeability resistance by approximately 22%, and chloride ion penetration resistance by 14%- 17%. The optimum content of treated bamboo fibre in concrete was at 2% of the cement weight. Treated bamboo fibres showed the least performance reduction after wet-dry cycles procedures, with mechanical strength reduced by about 16.7%, water permeability resistance by about 9.1%, and chloride ion penetration resistance by about 6.5% as compared to that of concrete with untreated bamboo fibre 20.1%, 11.1%, 10.5%, respectively. This indicates that calcium hydroxide-treated bamboo fibres most effectively enhance concrete durability, aligning with the goals of sustainable construction by improving material performance while reducing the environmental impact associated with traditional reinforcement methods
