Mechanical behaviour of resin - transfer - moulded composites (epoxy D.E.R. ™ 331™ and kenaf fiber) had been compared under different fiber loading and through water absorption test due to the special characteristics possessed by natural fibers. Agro-based fibers via natural fibers are a viable alternative to inorganic / material based reinforcing fibers in commodity fiber - thermoset composite materials as long as the right processing conditions are used and for applications where higher water absorption may be so critical. This final year project is designed to provide a basic foundation in the theory and operation of the Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM) in producing kenaf - epoxy composite. Experience will be gained in the set - up, running, trouble shooting, and shutting down of a RTM machine. Kenaf reinforced epoxy and unreinforced epoxy produced by RTM undergoes physical and mechanical testings, as well as water absorption test. Water absorption test is meant due to the special characteristics possessed by natural fibers. The latter specimens after impact test undergo analysis. The morphology of the fractured surface was analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Increase in fiber loading will increase the mechanical property of the composite and moisture absorption do affect the property of the composite as well. Through this project, it was hoped that improvements can be done in order to obtain a more accurate result thus improving the techniques to produce a better thermoset composites with much better quality, especially composites that involves the use of natural fibres.
