Abstract
Physical Vaper Deposition (PVD) is a thin-film coating process aimed to increase the wear resistance of the mechanical devices. This method provides a strong mechanical bonding between the coated layer and the substrate. The purpose of this study is to investigate the comparative wear behavior of uncoated aluminum, titanium-coated aluminum, cobalt-coated aluminum and double-layer (Ti-Co) coated aluminum. Cobalt and titanium target have been studied due to their special mechanical properties such as high strength, high corrosion-resistance and high toughness. In this study, we mainly concentrated on wear resistance of uncoated specimen, coated specimen, and double layer coated. Grain size, thickness layer, and composite material are not taken into consideration. Several tests had been conducted to evaluate the wear behavior which are Vickers hardness test, SEM test, Roughness test and wear test. The result of the study indicates that coated specimen has higher wear resistance compared to non-coated specimen.
