| dc.description.abstract | Composites made from natural fibers have gained significant attention in recent years due to their environmentally friendly nature, low production costs, and adequate mechanical performance. However, natural fibers have limitations such as poor moisture resistance and weak interfacial adhesion compared to synthetic fibers. This study was conducted to observe the effect of a polyester surfacing veil layer on the mechanical properties of hybrid natural and glass fiber laminates fabricated using the Light Vacuum-Assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VARTM) process. The laminates were prepared with an asymmetric stacking sequence using flax and glass fibers, while several samples incorporated a polyester surfacing veil layer on the outer surface. No chemical or physical treatment was applied to the fibers. Tensile, flexural, and impact tests were carried out, and morphological analysis was performed using optical microscope to determine failure mechanisms. Findings revealed that the presence of the surfacing veil layer enhanced interfacial bonding and reduced fiber pull-out phenomena, particularly in impact tests. The tensile and flexural values slightly increased depending on the stacking configuration, with the veil layers providing better surface integrity and significantly reducing resin-rich areas. Therefore, the application of surfacing veils is an effective method to improve interfacial adhesion and mechanical consistency, making the composite suitable for structural applications in the automotive, marine, and furniture sectors, where surface quality is a key feature. | |
