Abstract
The automotive industry is currently focused on manufacturing sustainable transportation options, specifically Electric Vehicles (EVs), as an alternative to Internal Combustion Engine (ICV) vehicles. These efforts have resulted in the introduction of newer EV models with various specifications and designs, making the younger generation more aware of the options available. However, the decision to own an EV comes with its own set of challenges. This study aims to identify and classify the factors influencing the new generation’s choices when considering EV ownership, whether it is engineering or non-engineering factors. Data was collected through questionnaires from individuals between the ages of 13 to 50 and analysed to determine the trends in vehicle preferences and the factors impacting these preferences. The prevailing inclination in vehicle preferences by the new generation indicates a notable trend towards ICVs, as approximately 47% of respondents selected it as their top choice among other options. However, more than 50% of participants expressed a desire to own an EV, but various impediments such as ownership cost, infrastructure availability, and knowledge level were identified as substantial barriers impacting their vehicle selection. Other factors, such as model availability, range anxiety, and environmental awareness, also play a role in influencing their choices.
