Abstract
This project is studied the formation of CuAlO2 by solid state reaction of chemical solution deposited CuO and Al2O3 fibers. Preparation of CuAlO2 fibers were started from immersion of Al2O3 fibers into Cu-precursor follow by solid state heat treatment to form CuO and CuAlO2 phases. The effect of annealing parameters was investigated varying the temperature from 1000 °C to 1200 °C and duration of annealing from 10 minutes to 60 minutes. Further investigation on effects of heat treatment profiles such as two steps solid state reaction and modified two steps reaction were employed. In the study of annealing condition, sample annealed in air was compare with sample annealed in Ar + H2 condition. Different sample preparation conditions were employed to optimize the formation of CuAlO2 pure phase. All heat treated samples were investigated by x-ray diffraction XRD, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer (EDX). The results showed that pure CuAlO2 fibers were obtained through a complete two-steps-solid state reaction. The electrical properties of pure CuAlO2 fibers were determined by semiconductor parameter analyzer (SPA). While the optical properties of pure CuAlO2 fibers were studied by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis). The results showed that optical transmittance of pure CuAlO2 fibers were estimated to be around 60%. While direct band gap and indirect band gap of these fibers was determined to be 3.1 eV and 1.3 eV respectively. The growth mechanism of CuAlO2 was proposed based on the effects of annealing.
