Abstract
This study investigates the potential of co-digestion and aeration techniques to enhance biogas production from food waste. The food waste, if left on the landfill would contribute to climate change that is more potent than what carbon dioxide would do. Alternatively, anaerobic digestion is used to mitigate this problem. However, current anaerobic digestion system with solely either food waste or animals manure require much time to obtain high amount of biogas.
Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of co-digestion with cow manure and the impact of aeration on biogas yield. In each experiment, two digesters are used. One with co-digestion and one with solely food waste, while in the other experiment, one digester is fermented with an air pump and one is done without it. Cow manure is not used in micro-aeration experiment to focus on the effect of the aeration. The experiments were carried
out over a period of 7 days with 3 kg of food waste for each digester and total of 12 kg food waste has been used. This study showed that the co-digestion with cow manure significantly increased biogas production compared to mono-digestion of food waste alone. The breakdown of organic matter was facilitated by the higher presence of methanogenic bacteria in cow manure. Co-digestion has 2.61% higher volume of methane per sample volume compared to
mono-digestion. Aerated digester shows a 6.06 % higher biogas production compared to non aerated digester. The aeration is more effective in promoting the hydrolysis stage in which its volatile solid content is reduced 3.43 % more than the co-digestion setup.
