Abstract
Cultural influence in project management has recently received significant attention from academics due to its vital role in the success or failure of projects. In the construction industry, many empirical investigations have examined the influence of culture on project management, but the investigations of organizational culture within a project level are not commonly addressed. The aim of this study is to determine the impact of project organizational culture on the performance of construction projects in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) based on a work-practice perspective. Data collection was from a detailed analysis of the literature and from the experience of key project participants (clients, consultants, and contractors) who were engaged in construction projects in the UAE. A mixed-methods approach (qualitative approach (interviews) and quantitative approach (questionnaire)) has been used in this study. A total of 124 recently completed construction projects in the UAE with specific data gathering through questionnaires were analysed by using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software to examine the correlation between project culture and performance. This study has clarified a significant positive relationship between project organizational culture and project performance. The findings reveal that contractor commitment related factors are the most significant cultural factors affecting overall project performance, followed by cooperative orientation related factors, then worker orientation related factors. Also, the findings reveal that contractor commitment related factors are the most significant cultural factors affecting client satisfaction with quality, client satisfaction with schedule, client satisfaction with cost, participant satisfaction with safety, and labour productivity, whereas cooperative orientation related factors are the most significant cultural factor affecting contractor satisfaction with profitability, while worker orientation related factors are the most significant cultural factor affecting lessons learned. The results of this study assist professionals in the construction industry of the UAE and other countries to implement practices to improve the culture within projects level that can contribute to enhancing the construction project’s performance and success
