Self-healing coatings can help mitigate the problem of corrosion in metal substrates, as these coatings restore protection and operational functionality without human involvement. In this work, self-healing and improved anticorrosion coatings made from graphene-reinforced natural rubber ionomer (GR/NR) were successfully prepared for metal substrates. These coatings combined the elasticity and self-healing qualities of natural rubber ionomers with the unique thermal stability, mechanical strength, and barrier properties of graphene. The findings showed that the inclusion of graphene significantly enhanced the self-healing efficiency, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance of the coatings. In particular, Self-Healing Rubber Compound (SHRC + 0.15 wt%) achieved the best overall coating performance, with reduced friction, higher stability, and improved self-healing ability. It was also found that (SHRC + 0.15 wt%) exhibited the lowest coefficient of friction (COF) of 0.690 and the lowest standard deviation of 0.354, demonstrating the best frictional performance in the study and revealing stable friction under abrasion and wear conditions. The adhesion tests also showed that (SHRC + 0.15 wt%) had strong adhesion to metal substrates, with minimal coating loss after the X-cut tape test. Lastly This research focuses on developing graphene-reinforced natural rubber ionomer (GR/NR) coatings with self-healing and anticorrosion capabilities. Using various characterization techniques (zeta potential, FTIR, FESEM, adhesion, and corrosion tests), the study confirms graphene's effectiveness in enhancing mechanical strength, self-healing, and corrosion resistance. Healing tests showed that coatings with graphene (0.05 wt% - 0.20 wt%) performed better than the one without (0%), due to graphene’s strength.
