Abstract
Posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) is one of the spinal fusions of low back pain where the surgery is done from the back (posterior) of the body rather than the front. The used of the intervertebral cage as the implant in the PLIF has become a common choice in recent years. Three dimensional computer simulations using finite element analysis software were performed to make comparison between the different cage design features due to the aspects of the biomechanics to PLIF. Three finite element models of cages with vertebral body that consists of cancellous bone and cortical shell which reproduced the L3 lumbar developed using MSC Patran software. The simulations of the cage-vertebral body assemblies were then conducted using MSC Nastran which is integrated with MSC Patran. The three considered cages were rectangular hollow type, the Jaguarâ„¢ Lumbar I/F CageR ( Depuy Spine), the 'generic' cage and the RF cage (A-Spine Inc., Japan). Simulations were run under various distributed loads, flexion moments and extension moments and the results being compared with the previous study. The differences gained being discussed in associating to the cage design features.
