Abstract
Leachate may be defined as liquid that generates from decomposition of solid waste with precipitation in form of run off from landfill or form infiltrates. Some infiltration will evaporate, some may be stored within the landfill and becomes leachate. Leachate contains mixture of organic and inorganic materials, dissolved solids and colloidals, which are potential to pollute underlying soil and groundwater. Therefore it is important for municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills to have leachate controlling system to minimize the leachate by collecting and removing it to a location where it may be treated properly. In order to design a good landfill system, we need to know the quantity of leachate produced from the landfill. The prediction of the quantity of leachate is a difficult task because there are numerous different parameters which affects the rate of leachate generation. A single difference in any parameter will cause a considerable difference in leachate generation. Studies are still going on to find the best model or method to predict leachate production. In this study, water balance method are chosen to predict leachate generation rate. This report included overview about Pulau Burung Landfill Site (PBLS), literature review on leachate generation, method of calculation and computer program by using Visual Basic 6.0 programming language. The result from the program is also given at the end of this report.
