Abstract
need to obtain information on the performance and lifetime of tool in service is the prime importance to many industries. Example of application includes the manufacturing industry (mold, dies, drilling bits, etc), the aerospace industry (components of jet engines), the oil industry (drilling equipment), the power industry (vessels and pipes), the automotive industry (component of motors), and construction industry (structural components in building). With embedded sensors, the structures are capable of monitoring parameters at such critical locations and accessible to ordinary sensors. It calls for online acquisition of information such as temperature and strain values. To embed sensors in the functional structures such as using is a laser based fused deposition modeling is a methodology capable of integrating sensors during fabrication of a structural component or model. My project is to find a methodology on how to embed a sensor (strain gauge) into a model with Fused Deposition Modeling process, using FDM 3000 from Stratasys Inc. FDM 3000 is a modeler usually used to fabricate physical ABS objects for study purposes but not to integrating sensor into the structures. However, by using the capability of the FDM 3000 itself, we can embed a sensor into a model. Before a methodology is determined, a lot of study and test run have to be done. The challenge of this project is not only to determine a methodology but also integrate sensor into model without damaging it. Therefore many ideas and concepts have been generated so that the sensor is successfully embedded. The methodology on how to embed a sensor (strain gauge) into a model is explained in Step-by-step so that the readers can easily understand and also can try to fabricate for themselves. The schematic illustration on how to embed the sensor into the model is shown so that the readers have a clear picture what I did to fulfill the project goal. The experiment also purposed a method whereby the sensor (strain gauge) can be tested to verify its functionality after being embedded it into the model. The study on strain gauge is included and the installation procedure is shown.
