Abstract
Graphing calculator is a device which is widely used in teaching and learning of
Mathematics by a few countries such as United States, Australia and Britain. Its unique
abilities to draw, analyze graphs, perform complex calculation and analyzes matrix and
statistics makes this device a good technology to support teaching and learning process.
In this study, the researcher is interested to know the affect of using graphing
calculator in learning Matrix at Matriculation level. A total of 60 students from Kolej
Matrikulasi Pulau Pinang participated in this study. They were divided into 2 groups
which consists of 30 students for experimental group and another 30 students for
control group. They were given pre and post test containing 5 items. These 5 items in
the test were designed based on direct and indirect (application) questions. Students in
the experimental group were given graphing calculator to assist them in learning and
answering the topic Matrix, where as students in the control group learned the same
topic using traditional the method.
Data obtained from the pre and post test were analyzed by Statistical Package
for Social and Sciences (SPSS). The findings showed that students in the experiment
group performed better than the control group. Their overall scores were better than
control group. More specifically, the study shows that experiment group performed
better for item 1, 2, and 4 when using graphing calculator but not for application items 3
and 5. Both groups show same scores for application item 3 and 5. The highest impact
