In this study, a low toxicity monomer, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylic (HEMA), was used in the application of a three-dimensional (3D) polymer gel dosimeter. The three objectives of this study are to determine the suitable mixture of a HEMA gel dosimeter, to investigate the characteristics of a HEMA gel dosimeter, and to evaluate the application of a HEMA gel dosimeter in 3D treatment planning. HEMA gel was prepared under normoxic condition by using gelatine, deionised water, N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (BIS) as a cross-linker, tetrakis (hydroxymethyl) phosphonium chloride (THPC) as an anti-oxidant, and hydroquinone (HQ) as an oxygen scavenger. Then, HEMA gel was irradiated under a linear accelerator using 6 MV photon beam, where the set-up followed the designated calibration conditions (IAEA, TRS No. 398). The degree of polymerisation was evaluated by using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with the R2 values of dose response. Finally, a HEMA gel dosimeter was applied in 3D treatment planning and compared with a treatment planning system (TPS). The results show that the polymerisation stage, which consists of induction, propagation, termination, and chain transfer, depends on the type and concentration of chemical mixtures. Besides, the properties of HEMA gel are excellent in terms of stability, accuracy, precision, and reproducibility as a dosimeter. HEMA gel with the highest sensitivity for dose response was selected and applied in three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT).en_US
