Abstract
The objectives of this study is to investigate the effect of citric acid concentration on the properties of β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) granular cement. Acidic calcium phosphate solution containing 0.01 mol/L, 0.10 mol/L and 1.00 mol/L of citric acid were exposed to β-TCP granules at physiological body conditions for 5, 10, 20 and 30 minutes. Several characterization method such as X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), porosity analysis and compression test were carried out on β-TCP granular cement in order to understand the properties of set specimens. XRD result showed that the intensity of dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD) phase reduced when increasing the concentration of citric acid. SEM analysis result showed that DCPD crystal precipitated and bridged β-TCP granules on the β-TCP granular surface. The amount of DCPD crystal were decreased when increasing the concentration of citric acid. Increasing the concentration of citric acid from 0.01 mol/L to 1.00 mol/L, porosity of β-TCP granular cement increased from 13.2% to 27.4%. The mechanical strength of set specimen reduced about 27% when increasing the concentration of citric acid to 1.00 mol/L. On the other hand, formation of hydroxyapatite (HAp) with spherical structure were observed as early as one day after soaking 10 minutes treated β-TCP granular with Hanks’ Balanced Salt Solution (HBSS) solution. Therefore, this study succeed to prove that the setting reaction of β-TCP granular cement at physiological body condition were prolonged by increasing the citric acid concentration.
