Abstract
Pour point depressant (PPD) is used as the alternative to reduce the problems associated with the flow ability of the crude oils. PPD is prepared through the emulsion that will able to flow at low temperature. But there is a lack of study in the anti-freezing agent of the emulsion PPD. Ethylene glycol (EG) had been chosen in this research as anti-freezing agent. EG has been used in the ratio with water to produce PPD through the emulsion system. So, the aim of this research was to investigate the effect of the EG and its ratio towards freezing properties. The EG and its ratio has been manipulated in this study in order to produce the good result of freezing properties. 7 samples of emulsified PPD were prepared with EG:water ratio 20:80, 25:75, 30:70, 35:65, 40:60, 50:50, 60:40. The rheological behavior of these samples also were studied, with viscosity at room temperature, particle size, zeta potential after produced the emulsified PPD. The results indicated that the performance of PPD was dependent on the ratio of EG:water. Evaluation of the samples was conducted by using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). All the samples were tested by DSC to get the most effectiveness freezing properties of the samples. EG with the ratio towards water 50:50 gave the best result of freezing temperature which was -40.85 ˚C. In order to confirm the most effective sample as pour point depressants, pour point performance testing was conducted. In this research, a mixture of hexane with paraffin wax was used to imitate crude oil or as a synthetic crude oil. For the best optimization of the emulsified PPD ratio is 50:50. 3000 ppm of emulsified PPD ratio 50:50 showed good efficiency for pour point performance as flow improved.
