Abstract
Control chart techniques have been widely used in industries to monitor a process for
quality improvement. Usually, two control charts are required to monitor both the
process mean and variability. Efforts have been made to use a single control chart to
monitor both the process mean and variability at the same time. Numerous single
variable control charts were suggested in the last 15 years to allow a simultaneous
monitoring of both the process mean and variance. A simultaneous monitoring of the
mean and variance is more meaningful as in a real situation; the mean and variance may
shift at the same time. The objective of this project is to compare the performances of
several single variable control charts, namely the semicircle chart, MaxEWMA chart and
single MA chart, in terms of their in-control and out-of-control average run lengths
(ARLs).
