This project aims to remove the phosphorus in the iron ore sample from iron processing plant in Chaah, Johor, Malaysia by using physical and chemical process. The characterization study was performed using visual assessment, XRF and SEM-EDX. X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) analysis indicated that the presence of Fe2O3 (70.79%), P2O5 (1.49%), SiO2 (24.75%), CaO (1.39%) and Al2O3 (0.79%). Based on the visual assessment, the sample was hematite due to the reddish streak when scraped across a streak across a streak plate and weakly magnet by using a magnet. By using SEM-EDX, the phosphorus was interlocked with the iron ore and the size of the phosphorus was fine but sometimes, the size of phosphorus is not easily to recognize due to the mode occurrence. For the coagulation/ flocculation process, the difference of alum was used which is 200mg/L, 300mg/L and 400mg/L and the layers was formed. Based on 300mg/L of the alum concentration, the percentage of the Fe2O3 increased from 70.79% to 80.61% and P2O5 was reduced from 1.49% to 0.67%. The size of the sample after the coagulation/ flocculation process was differenced which is from 75μm to more 10μm.en_US
