Abstract
Traditional life data analysis involves analyzing times-to-failure data (of a product,
system or component) obtained under normal operating conditions in order to quantify
the life characteristics of the product, system or component. In many situations, such
life data is very difficult to obtain. The reasons for this difficulty can include the long
life times of today's products, the small time period between design and release and the
challenge of testing products that are used continuously under normal conditions.
To better understand the failure mechanism and their life characteristics, several
methods and techniques have been devised to force these products to fail more quickly
than they would under normal use conditions. Such methods or techniques have been
termed "accelei·ated life testing". This method of testing is widely used especially in
manufacturing sectors where producers want to determine the lifetime of their products.
Furthermore, they can also increase the reliability and improve the quality of their
products based on tests that have been carried out.
This dissertation will try to give a general overview of accelerated life testing
including types of acceleration and stress loading, mathematical models and analysis of
accelerated life test data. To illustrate the analysis of accelerated test data, two case
studies will be presented using data obtained by simulation. Softwares that have been
used in this study are Statgraphic Plus version 4.1, SPSS version 7.5 and SAS version
6.12.
