In this dissertation, a method for generating surfaces by regarding them as solutions to partial differential equations is discussed. Bloor and Wilson (1989) first proposed the method of surface generation based on partial differential equations. Although this method is believed to be of wide applicability in geometric modelling, its potential is illustrated by applying it to the field of blend and free-form surfaces generation. In particular, this dissertation will concentrate upon illustrating the method by series of examples, rather than becoming involved in detailed discussion of the role of the various parameters that occur in the formulation of the problem. The problem of blend generation in computer-aided design is essentially that of being able to generate a smooth surface to act as a bridging 'secondary' transition between neighbouring 'primary' surfaces. So, an attempt has been made to demonstrate the power of the technique for generating smooth blends between varieties of intersecting surfaces. Then a method of generating free-form surfaces using suitable chosen partial differential equations is discussed. By varying the boundary conditions and a parameter in the partial differential equations, it is demonstrated that a wide variety of surface shapes are accessible to the method.en_US
