Abstract
This thesis explores the cubic curve and surface construction methods proposed by Said (1990), using basis functions which are derived from Bezier (1972) and Ball (1974) basis functions. These basis functions are known as Said basis functions or Bezier-Ball basis functions. Bezier-Ball cubic basis functions can be reduced to the Bezier, Ball and Timmer (1980) cubic basis functions by choosing suitable weights. The properties of the basis functions and curves, the influence of weights and the criterion of G1 continuity (Le. tangent plane continuity) are studied and applied in font construction. Surface construction in Computer Aided Geometric Design (CAGD) is usually formed from collections of surface patches, with certain continuity conditions imposed at a common boundary between adjacent patches. Specifically, in this thesis, the continuity used is of G1 continuity. For most applications in industry, this continuity is sufficient. This thesis also explores and compares the three surface construction methods proposed by Gatmulkand Clark (1978), Goodman (1991) ·and Said (1990) by using Bezier-Ball basis functions.
