Abstract
In this study, colloidal gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were synthesised using the seeding growth method with varying sizes of 20 nm, 30 nm, 40 nm and 50 nm. The AuNPs suspension was characterised using Zeta-sizer to investigate the dispersion and aggregation properties of the particles. The AuNPs produced were functionalised with 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (11-MUA). After that, poly-vinyl alcohol (PVA) was used as stabilising agent in the solution. The functionalised AuNPs with the presence of PVA was used to detect lead(II) chloride. Several parameters were studied; the effect size of AuNPs in capping process, the effect of surface functionalisation AuNPs with 11-MUA, the effect of poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) on aqueous solution of AuNPs, and the detection sensitivity of the lead(II) chloride. The optimum size of AuNPs was 40 nm functionalised 5.8 mM optimum 11-MUA. The presence of PVA in the aqueous solution contributed to more stable AuNPs for lead(II) detection. The produced AuNPs colorimetric sensor has the ability to detect up to 1 ppb concentration of lead. The result proved that AuNPs colorimetric sensor has potential to be developed as heavy metal sensors.
