Abstract
Natural gas is a mixture of hydrocarbon with methane (CH4) as the major component. CH4 purification is useful in producing low cost alternative fuel which is environmentally friendly. Malaysia natural gas fields is currently facing an issue where CO2 content in the natural gas is high in the ranges of 28% to 87%. This study is aimed at finding the optimum purity and recovery of CH4 with natural gas content of 30% CH4 and 70% CO2. Plate Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) was used to study the CH4 enrichment by using Activated Palm Kernel Shell (PKS) adsorbent. The CH4-CO2 mixture flowing through the plate PSA at 3 bar in room temperature. The purity and recovery of CH4 strongly depended on the adsorption time and pressure. The optimum operating condition to produce the highest purity and recovery of CH4 through activated PKS adsorbent occurred at 2 minute adsorption. The highest CH4 purity and recovery were 49.8% and 82.9% respectively while the highest CO2 purity and recovery were 75.2% and 53.7%.
