Potential use of titanium tetrachloride as coagulant to treat leachate

dc.description.abstractCoagulation is widely used in leachate treatment. The conventional coagulants will produce high toxicity of residual and large quantity of sludge. The aim of this study is to investigate the potential use of TiCl4 as coagulant to treat leachate by measuring the coagulation performance in terms of reduction in suspended solids (RSS), colour (RColour), chemical oxygen demand (RCOD) and heavy metals. The experiment was performed by design of experiment (DOE). The parameters involved were pH (4, 7 and 10), TiCl4 dosage (800 mg/L, 1000 mg/L and 1200 mg/L) and chitosan dosage (0 mg/L, 250 mg/L and 500 mg/L). Samples were characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX), X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) and Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES). The results showed that the highest RSS of 92.02 % was achieved at the pH 4,1200 mg/L of TiCl4 and without chitosan addition. Besides, the highest RColour of 82.80 % was achieved at the pH 4 with 1200 mg/L of TiCl4 and 500 mg/L of chitosan, while the highest RCOD of 71.92 % was achieved with same conditions but pH 10. The DOE analysis showed that pH was the most significant parameter, followed by chitosan dosage and TiCl4 dosage for RSS and RColour while for RCOD, the most significant parameter was chitosan dosage, followed by pH and TiCl4 dosage. Zeta potential measurement was measured to determine the coagulation mechanism at different pH. Heavy metals present in leachate was significantly removed by TiCl4 with the aid of chitosan. The use of chitosan reduced TiCl4 dosage needed with better reduction efficiency. In conclusion, TiCl4 with chitosan is effective and promising coagulant for leachate treatment.en_US
