dc.description.abstract | 45S5 bioactive glass (BG) has been used in clinical uses specifically in bone regeneration application. However, the low mechanical properties of BG has limited their application in load bearing implant. In the first stage of the study, the effect of alumina composition (0%, 1wt%, 2wt%, 3wt%, 4wt%) was carried out to synthesis 45S5 BG by melt-quench method. At the second stage, the sample with the highest compressive strength value from stage 1 was sintered at 750˚C and 950˚C to investigate sintering effect on the properties of BG 45S5. The prepared BG have been characterized using XRF, XRD, FTIR, TGA-DTA, compressive strength test and EDX. The effect of Al2O3 on the properties of BG before and after in-vitro bioactivity testing was also investigated. The in vitro bioactivity study of sample prepared were carried out by soaking in SBF solution for 1 day, 3 days and 7 days. After in-vitro bioactivity test, the development of hydroxyapatite (HA) layer on the surface of BG was observed by using SEM. The analysis of SBF after each immersion time was tested for the pH value. From the result obtained, the addition of 2wt% alumina to the bioactive glass provide the highest compressive strength (5.30MPa) value but lower biocompatibility behavior compared to original 45S5 bioactive glass as reference. The addition of alumina as network former into the silicate glass system reduces the glass dissolution which have a lower release of ions for formation apatite layer. On the other hand, sintered BG shows an increase in compressive strength and sample sintered at 950˚C has highest compressive strength (10.70MPa) but decrease in biological behaviour with the crystalline phase formed. | en_US |
