Abstract
The aim of this project is to assess chiidren1s knowledge about Renewable Energy (RE) and
Energy Efficiency (EE) and subsequently use this knowledge to create awareness of RE and EE
among children. Preschool children's informal experiences are rich with aspects of RE and EE
which could be harnessed as a strong foundation to promote children's awareness and knowledge of
RE and EE. First, preschool childrens were informally interviewed on their ideas of EE. The children
were shown every day situational experiences and were asked to talk or tell story about these
objects. The findings from the study was used to develop preschool modules integrating Renewable
Energy (RE) and Energy Efficiency (EE) in mathematics, science and Malay language. The modules
developed were tried out during USM preservice teacher's practical training. 220 preschool students
from 9 rural and urban schools around Kedah and Penang states were involved. Data were
collected using video tapes of pre service teachers teaching using the modules and teacher
reflection on their practices in implementing the modules. Initial analyses of data indicated that
preschool children are actively involved during the activities as suggested in the modules and they
also give positive responses. A website was designed (http://epedagogiprasekolah.ses.usm.my/) to
encourage preschool teachers to implement and integrating Energy Efficiency in their teaching. The
main section for this website discuss about lesson plans, resources, teachers activities and children
activities. The website too has forums for interested teachers to interact.
