dc.description.abstract | Groundwater is an important freshwater source that needs less treatment than surface water. Groundwater is pumped from an aquifer under the ground and is generally less contaminated than surface water, but contaminants such as heavy metals, nitrates, volatile organic compounds and pathogens threatened groundwater quality. This project studies the treatment of groundwater, which is removing salt using marble filter. The study area is at USM Engineering Campus, Nibong Tebal. Although the Penang state does not have water shortage issue often, it is important to discover new source of water to be used either for domestic purpose or for irrigation water use. In this project, the groundwater is sampled from the monitoring well located in USM Engineering Campus, Nibong Tebal. The marble used as filter media is high grade marble with 97.3 % of CaCO3. The groundwater is characterized using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) analysis whereas the marble is characterized by XRay Fluorescent (XRF) analysis and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Filtration process is done by using flowrate of 0.017 L s-1 . ICP-OES analysis determines the concentration of contaminants in the water sample and salinity is measured during the whole process to be analysed. The results show that high concentration of sodium (Na) and chlorine (Cl) element from the ICP-OES test. Salinity analysis shows that salt removal efficiency is viable for 10 minutes of filtration process. | en_US |
