Abstract
Life extension of steel structures such as naval ships requires consideration of plate thickness losses due to corrosion, particularly when protective measures such as paint coatings and sacrificial protection are not entirely effective. In this research, factors were discussed governing corrosion phenomena on the structural steel component in marine environment and various forms of steel corrosion products are described. Method for corrosion monitoring, testing and evaluation are analyzed and measured for corrosion prevention. In this research, low carbon steel was used as cathode material whereas pure zinc was used as anode material. The effect of corrosion environment on steel was discussed and its important for corrosion is estimated. Different corrosion models and their ability to predict the corrosion development are presented. Immersion test and newly developed cupping method were subjected on the sample. The rate and performance of the sample is then analyzed using linear polarization and electrochemical impedence spectroscopy. As a conclusion, the rate of corrosion of low carbon steel in acid is higher compared to alkali. Surface morphology of the sample also being analyzed in this research to identify the element present on the surface of the sample. As a conclusion, sacrificial anode cathodic protection is an effective method in minimize the corrosion in naval ship.
