Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of using tin oxide as support for niclCeland to stuay the achvity of1lie catalyst -iii liydrogeiiation reactioi:i.:nWell-dispersed crystalline tin dioxide (SnO 2 ) nanoparticles were synthesized by a simple water-in-oil (w/o) microemulsion-assisted hydrothermal process and also sol gel method. Sn02 obtained was white-yellowish particles which have tetragonal structure by characterized ofXRD and ' the size is in the range of 2.00-6.00 nm. Nickel nanoparticles supported on Sn02 were prepared by chemical process reduction of nickel acetate with hydrazine as the reduction agent in ultra pure water at 80 °C and 100 °C. Reduced nickel is black in color. Different nickel loading to Sn02 i.e 2.5, 5, and 7.5 % wt were prepared. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, TEM,and SEM-EDX. Ni/Sn02 nanoparticles were well dispersed with average particle size ranged from 3.00-10.00 nm. The morphology of the nanoparticles was found to exist as a mixture of diamond shape and sphere's. The catalytic activities of the nanoparticles were tested in the hydrogenation process of acetone and 4metylpenta-2-one by varying the types of solvent which are hexane, ethanol and butanol. Only acetone was successfully converted to propa-2-nol. The sample which was prepared from 2.5 % wt nickel, using 10 mL hydrazine, reflux for 3 hours at the temperature of 80 °C showed the highest results of hydrogenation process.
