Abstract
There many industries that uses dye to be one their substance in generating their desired product. Those substances identified as toxic and carcinogenic making it one of the pollutants to water bodies. The aim of this research is to study the performance of mangoes peel based activated carbon (MPAC) to remove methylene blue (MB) dye using physical activation, CO2 under microwave heating. Optimum preparation conditions of MPAC were observed at 440 W for 2.17 minutes of activation time, resulted in 84.72% removal of MB dyes. The Bruneaur-Emmet-Teller (BET) surface area, mesopore surface area and fixed carbon content of MPAC are 282.44 m2/g, 175.60 m2/g and 70.68% respectively. The pore diameter of MPAC was discovered to be mesopore at 2.54nm. Adsorption equilibrium of MB on MPAC followed Langmuir isotherm with monolayer adsorption capacity of 196.08 mg/g. Pseudo-second order was found fit for adsorption kinetic data. The rate limiting step for MPAC adsorption is intraparticle diffusion.
