dc.description.abstractA cubic autocatalytic reaction model with linear decay in a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) is studied. The model comprises a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations which describes the autocatalytic behavior of two chemicals (a reactant and an autocatalyst) flowing into the CSTR. Two cases were considered, that is, in the presence of an autocatalyst and in the absence of an autocatalyst in the inflow. The nature of steady states, stability and behavior of the system is investigated analytically and numerically. Numerical simulations using Mathematica are carried out on the system to have a better insight of the model. In the presence of autocatalyst, the analysis shows that the steady states are stable. While in the absence of an autocatalyst, the model exhibits three steady states, where one of the steady state is stable, the second is a saddle point and the last is spiral node. A discussion on the effect of incomplete mixing, effects of recycle and time delay on the model is also presented. When the system is affected by incomplete mixing, the concentration of the chemicals varies but then attains equilibrium state after a period of time. The importance of adequate selection of residence time in the analysis is also considered. The analysis for the effects of recycle and time delay reveals that in the absence of autocatalyst in the inflow, the results are the same as when the system is not affected by recycle. However, in the presence of autocatalyst, the existence of oscillation makes a difference to the analysis. Physical interpretations of the various results are also given.en_US
