Abstract
Textile industry these days has been identified as the source of wastewater pollution which result in spreading many drawback such as fatal diseases and causes the water source to be unsafe to be consume everyone. The dyes that textile industry use are hard to cure that leads to disposal problem. Nowadays, researchers have being doing research on converting biomass into activated carbon which could adsorb the dyes that flows in the water sources. The aim of this research is to produce activated carbon from mangosteen peel (MP) in removing methylene blue (MB) dye using physical activation that involves the use of carbon dioxide for activation and microwave radiation. Optimum parameters and condition for mangosteen peel activated carbon (MPAC) preparation was 616 Watt of microwave irradiation power and 7 minutes of activation time which gives 96.22 % of MB removal. Optimized MPAC has its own Bruneaur-Emmet-Teller (BET) surface area which is 348.74 m2/g, mesopore surface area is 211.63 m2/g, pore volume is 0.2536 cm3/g and fixed carbon content is 68.31 %. The average pore diameter of MPAC is 4.65 nm. Langmuir model fits the best for the isotherm model of MB dye removal. It was found that pseudo-second order kinetic model fitted the best for MB dye adsorption on MPAC.
