Abstract
In today's challenging world, quality management is a very important factor in
satisfying customers' requirements, maintain the competitive edge and market share. In
order to improve the quality of products, the variation between unit to unit and the
variation from the target need to be reduced besides requiring the units to meet the
specifications. Kane (1996) has discussed the process capability indices, Cp, Cph Cpu and
Cpk to measure the performance of a process in order to meet the target and low
variation. These indices will be used as tools to measure the performance of a process if
the prerequisites are met. Normally, the prerequisites are not commonly met in the real
world, and this will lead to the misinterpretation of these indices. Many statisticians
have studied these effects.
This thesis is divided into two parts. Part I introduces the process capability
indices and some studies about these indices under non-normality. Part II covers our
study regarding the method of Cp computation which is recommended by Philippe
Castagliola ( 1996).
