dc.description.abstract | PLA pellets were dissolved in dichloromethane (DCM). The primary emulsion was obtained by dispersing gentamicin solution in PLA solution. Then the mixture was immediately emulsified in PVA solution. Surface hydrolysis treatment was performed to modify surface and introduce functionally on PLA. PLA loaded with gentamicin were immersed in NaOH solutions for 24 and 48 hours with different concentration NaOH used. The concentration of both catalyst solutions were varied ranging 0.05 M, 0.1 M, 0.3 M and 0.5 M. NaOH treated PLA microspheres were characterized by different characterization including Fourier Transform InfraRed (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Ultraviolet (UV) visible spectroscopy, Contact Angle and PLA microspheres wall thickness. The intense peak of gentamicin was expected to be determined by FTIR. It was expected that the surface roughness of treated PLA microspheres to be increased after the modification. . SEM results proved that the surface morphology of PLA microspheres is rougher with increased on concentration of NaOH solution. The encapsulation efficiency of PLA microspheres was determined by using Ultraviolet (UV) visible spectroscopy. The results recorded that 12 % of gentamicin encapsulated. Therefore, it can be concluded that there was gentamicin encapsulated in PLA microspheres after surface modification. From the results of contact angle, the lower the water contact angle, the higher the hydrophilicity of polymer surfaces. Contact angle decreased as the concentration of NaOH solution increased. It was also expected that the wall thickness of treated PLA microspheres increased as increasing in the concentration of NaOH solution. | en_US |
