Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the major factor of global warming and climate change. Hence, improving the efficiency of the CO2 capture technology is up most important. Porous membrane can be incorporated into gas absorption to enhance the mass transfer between gas and liquid phases by providing a large interfacial area. Furthermore, membrane gas absorption (MGA) requires low pressure for carbon capture and allows carbonation of brine at high pH. In this study, the effects of silane modification of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes with or without TiO2 nanoparticles on the membrane characteristics and carbon capture potential in MGA were studied. Membranes with spongy structure was successfully synthesized via phase inversion as shown in scanning emission microscope (SEM) images. The incorporation of TiO2 nanoparticles into PVDF membrane reduced the pore size in phase inversion. The porous structure was slightly hindered after silane modification, but the surface hydrophobicity was improved after silane modification. The hindrance was resulted from the grafting of Si-O-Si groups as proven by Fourier-transform infrared spectra. The water contact angle of PVDF/TiO2 membrane increased to 140 ยบ after silane modification. Hence, the CO2 absorption flux of the modified PVDF/TiO2 membrane (6.18 x 10-4 mol.m-2s-1) is the highest among the fabricated membranes. This membrane also captured more carbon using NaOH solution in MGA.en_US
