dc.description.abstract | The effect of different ratios of recycle Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (rABS)/Polystyrene (PS) blend and the effect of various concentrations of Maleic Anhydride Grafted Polystyrene (MA-g-PS) and styrene-butadiene-styrene copolymer (SBS) as compatibilizers on the tensile, impact, and morphological properties of rABS/PS blends were investigated. Melt blending was carried out using a single screw extrusion machine with temperatures along the barrel ranging from 190 to 210oC and a screw speed of 50 rpm. Based on the result from tensile and impact tests, 80rABS/20PS showed optimum mechanical properties due to high content of rABS, where the butadiene component in the ABS gives a rubbery properties thus results in higher ductility and flexibility. From the SEM, two phase morphology and poor interfacial adhesions between the rABS and PS components were observed. In the system 80rABS/20PS with different compositions of MA-g-PS, the tensile strength, elongation at break, and impact strength were improved in the presence of 2.5% MA-g-PS. The improvement of the properties may be due to the higher interfacial interaction between dispersed PS and rABS matrix. SEM micrographs indicated rougher surface with more rupture line than uncompatibilized blends. On the other hand, the addition of SBS will improved the toughness reduced the stiffness and strength of 80rABS/20PS blends. In conclusion, the compatibilization efficiency of rABS/PS blend was more pronounced by the addition of MA-g-PS as compatibilizer rather than SBS. | en_US |
