Abstract
Nanoscale carbonated hydroxyapatite (CHA) was successfully synthesized using nanoemulsion method by direct pouring method. The halloysite nanotube reinforced carbonated hydroxyapatite (HNT/CHA) composites were fabricated by using agate mortar by adding acetone into the powder to form a paste that can ensure the mixing process of HNT and CHA to be smooth and homogeneous. The halloyite nanotube reinforced hydroxyapatite (HNT/HA) composites were also fabricated using the same method instead of using commercial hydroxyapatite (HA) powder was used instead. The amount of HNT used to fabricate both composites was 0 wt%, 5 wt%, 10 wt%, 15 wt% and 20 wt%. The HNT/CHA composites were sintered at 800°C for 2 hours while the sintering temperature for the HNT/HA composites was 1000°C with the same period. Characterisation methods that used in this project to characterise the composites were X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersion X-Ray (EDX) and Carbon Hydrogen Nitrogen Analysis (CHN). Besides that, the sintering shrinkage of both composites was also recorded. Apparent porosity and bulk density measurement were also carried out by adopting Archimedes method. Compressive strength test for both composites was carried out by using Instron machine. The XRD results for both HNT/CHA and HNT/HA composites showed that there is no significant peak detected in XRD proving the presence of HNT in both composites after sintering process. For HNT/CHA composites, the sample without HNT reinforcement (CHA) has the highest compressive strength which was 18.70 MPa. While for HNT/HA composites, the sample with the highest amount of HNT reinforcement (20_HNT/HA) has the highest compressive strength which was 7.94 MPa.
