Abstract
Poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) nano emulsion was prepared through emulsion polymerization with different monomer loading as pour point depressant (PPD). These monomer loading were 10 %, 15 %, 20 %, 25 % and 30 % and the samples were labelled as A, B, C, D and E respectively. Production of PMMA nano emulsion has been confirmed through Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR). Absent of C=C on the PMMA emulsion samples proves that the polymerization process were occurred. Some portion of the PMMA emulsion without ethylene glycol (EG) mixture then was dried and diluted for molecular weight measurement through gel permeation chromatography (GPC). PPD C with 20% monomer loading has the highest average molecular weight, Mw with 4.09×107 g/mol. While PPD D with 25% monomer loading has the smallest Mw which is 2.86×107 g/mol. Meanwhile, all PPD samples, with or without EG were subjected to thermal study by using differential scanning calorimeter to study the difference in flow behaviors. PPD samples without EG has high melting point which is about 5˚C as compare to samples with EG which can achieve as low as -15˚C. Viscosity of PPD D was the highest due to higher polydispersity index. The PMMA emulsion particles size were being measured through dynamic light scattering zeta sizer. Besides, the emulsion morphology was studied through Scanning Electron Microscope. Results highlights for both testing showed that the emulsion is made up of nano size particles. The performance of the PPD is measured through ASTM D 97. PPD E able to provide highest temperature reduction which was 7˚C at 500 ppm PPD dosage. The stability of the emulsion system is being tested under two condition which were isothermal condition and freeze thaw cycle. PPD A, B and C has excellent stability since no phase separation occurred.
