Abstract
This work aims to establish the relation between the vibration level and the surface roughness of the bearing running under lightly oiled, greased and dry conditions. Tests were performed at a fixed load of 633 N and speed of 1500 rpm. The mechanical vibration and the surface condition were measured at thirty minutes interval. The result showed that the vibration level of the lightly oiled bearing increases with the surface roughness, and failure was detected after 90 minutes. For the grease lubricated condition, the acceleration level increases with the surface roughness and failure of the bearing occurred after 6480 minutes of running. For the dry un-lubricated bearing, failure occurred after 20 minutes. Measurement of the surface characteristic parameters include Ra (average roughness of profile), skewness, kurtosis and waviness were made to monitor these surface parameters variation and their relationship with the vibration of the bearing. The Pearson Correlation coefficient of each surface roughness parameters with the rms vibration level is calculated. The surface waviness shows the highest Pearson Correlation coefficient of 0.8. This analysis showed that the surface roughness can be correlated with the vibration level of the bearing.
